I believe back in the renaissance time period their hierarchy of knowledge was based off of what they believed and knew. Their ultimate goal was to get to God, which happended through religion or in Faustus's case magic equaled God.
My hierarchy of knowledge is based off of what I find to be the most important. For Faustus scholarship was the least important, but for me scholarship would be at the top of my hierarchy because without out scholarship you cannot achieve anything else. If you do not learn and teach others there cannot be medicine or law.
Hierarchy of Knowledge is based on the time period and what is important to society during that time period. For many today scholarship is more important than religion, but in the Renaissance period it was the complete opposite. How people decide what their hierarchy of knowledge is, is based of their own person beliefs and what the technology of the time period is.
